Title: AMURT ‘KOMESHA’ Project; APHIA plus Nairobi-Coast

The goal of the subproject which is a subproject in partnership with Pathfinder international is to promote quality of life for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in 3 counties of Coast province namely Kilifi (Malindi), Kwale (Ukunda) and Mombasa (Likoni). It is geared towards the fight against spread of HIV, care and support of infected and affected populations through quality-driven services and best practices in the three counties.

The project serves 1000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), 400 from Likoni, 300 from Ukunda and 300 from Malindi. The services are provided through 38 Community Health Workers (CHWs) who hail from the vicinity and understand the plight of the OVC. Each CHV is supposed to serve at least 25 OVC.

The project provides 6+1+1 services which include PSS, Education, Shelter and Care, Health, Food and Nutrition, Protection and Legal protection Services as well as Household Economic Empowerment and coordination of care. The services provided in January, February and March were; PSS and Food and Nutrition. The other services were not provided due to the fact that the funding didn’t come in time. However, the CHVs gave their best and did the home visits which resulted in the provision of PSS and Nutrition Education.

Key Activities for the subproject

These activities which began August 2012 include,
1. Provision of basic Shelte.
2. Provision of Health services.
3. Provision of protection and legal aid services.
4. Facilitate Child Rights Clubs.
5. OVC Care Counselors to visit OVC homes
6. Provision of Nutrition and food to OVCs.
7. School Uniform distribution
8. Commodities distribution
9. Conduct home and School visits in all Centers
10. Provide School Levies
11. Food Supplement distribution
12. OVC and Caregivers trainings
